Urbanism Architecture Bi-City Biennale of Shenzhen & Hong Kong 2013

After winning the first prize at the Shenzhen Biennale in 2011, Ole Bouman and I were invited for the curatorship of the entire Biennale for the 2013 edition, Ole Bouman as creative director, myself as curator. Our team was responsible for the creative direction, programming and design & restoration of the main location: an old glass factory in the area of Shekhou. For both tasks, there was only eight months and limited budget available. The design was done by 16 international architects from all over the world, including the Netherlands, China, India, Brazil, Finland, Italy and Serbia. For programming we decided that each contribution had to be an active contribution and non-static exhibitions. This way, the old glass factory had to be literally transformed into a culture factory. Partners included MOMA New York, Victoria and Albert Museum, Maxxi Rome, Finnish Museum of Architecture and OMA.
